Some people are living their dream daily. They have a very clear vision of what that is for them. You know those people, the ones who knew they wanted to be a doctor when they were in high school and now they are a 26 year old surgeon.
That has not been the road for me. Or the majority of people I would know. Most of us are figuring it out as we go. Maybe we had some childhood traumas to grow from, or we tried one direction and found out that wasn’t the path for us.
Wherever you are, that’s okay. Right here is where you start from.
If you want to invent a wind-powered car, you might need to learn about auto mechanics and wind power. But the first step is always some small action you take in the direction of your dreams. Sign up for a class, get a book from the library, have coffee with your friend who runs an auto shop.
Let’s say you have dream to be a writer. You love writing and feel like you have something important to share with the world. There is publishing to figure out, but it the process starts with sitting down with a computer or pen and paper and just…writing.
If you are experiencing general discontent but not sure what you would like to do next, start by carving out a little bit of time for yourself on a regular basis. It will feel weird, uncomfortable to begin with, but that is very normal. Eventually it will feel like a comfortable space that you look forward to enjoying.
“The journey to a thousand miles starts with a single step”. Cheesy, but ever so true. If you find yourself in a place that is not exactly where you would like to be, take step in the direction of your dreams, just one step, and then another. You CAN get there from right here.
I once had a friend who wanted a garden. She had no idea where to start. She read some books on what to plant and when to plant it. She still didn’t understand soil, and slugs and beneficial insects. She was so intrigued about growing food for her family that she decided to just start somewhere. She bought some compost, and a couple of plants and put them in the ground. She watered them and watched them. Eventually, they grew taller and broader until she had cucumbers and kale to harvest. She was surprised how easy it was. She made salad from the garden and said it was the freshest salad she had ever enjoyed. Fast forward a few years, she has gone from a few plants to a sizable plot surrounded by deer fencing. She has wood chips for the pathways, a potting bench, a pea trellis and several raised beds. When she looks out at the garden she feels, peace. She knows that she can dream, start and act. In this case, it has created beautiful bounty.
What dream will you begin today?
